What is the Webcomic Archive?
Paper collections of webcomics are great — they'll be around years
after the website is gone. On the other hand, it can easily take 200
strips and years of effort to make even a slim book. Publishing in a
comic-book format can reduce that to only fifty or sixty strips, or
maybe even fewer, depending on how many strips will fit on a page.
What does a creator get from WCA?
You get a professionally-printed 24-page book of your strip, at no cost
to you. WCA issues are similar in many ways to
ArtZone.
More specifically, you get 25 copies of it, to give away, sell, just
have, or whatever else you'd like to do with them. We, Jarlidium, also
get 25 copies of your book, which we will sell at the conventions we go
to, to cover the costs of printing. We will also solicit your books with
our distributors, such as Second
Ed, and sell copies to them if they choose to order. This adds up to
lots of exposure for your strip!
How do I get into WCA?
If you're interested, please contact us at info@jarlidium.com. We can only
publish a certain number of issues per year, and we have to be able to
sell them in order to cover the printing costs — that's what makes
it free to you — but we will be glad to review your strip and
discuss whether and when we can do an issue with you!
What do I have to supply?
Three things: cover art, an introduction or bio for the inside front
cover, and enough strips to fill approximately 23 pages. We
encourage you to also supply text commentary on the strips.
See the
content details page for more information.
What happens to the copyright on the art and text?
You retain the copyright on all art and text which you supply. Your
copyright notice will appear in the indicia, located with other
publication information on the last page of the book. When you sign an
WCA contract with us, you are granting us permission to:
- Publish a book of your art and text according to the terms described
on this page and on the WCA process
page. We will not sell your art and text except in this form.
- Use small samples for the purposes of promoting your book, the
ArtZone series, or Jarlidium Press in general. We will not produce any
new promotional material using your art or text after your book goes out
of print, but it may continue to appear in advertisements which were
prepared during the in-print period. Typical examples of promotional use
are:
- A thumbnail of the cover of your book on our website.
- Posters for use at our dealer's table at a convention.
- Advertisements which may appear in other Jarlidium titles, other
publications such as convention books, or as flyers which we hand out at
conventions.
- We may also provide a PDF of your book to distributors for the purpose
of promoting your book to them. The PDF will not be printable and they
will not be allowed to give it to anyone else.
What about a real book?
If you have enough strips, and we've done a couple WCA issues with you
which have sold well, then we would be willing to discuss a book.
