Cover Art
Your book will be printed with a wraparound color cover. This means that
you can submit one large piece of art which will flow from the front
cover to the back, or two separate pieces of art, one for each cover.
Some additional things to keep in mind:
- The art should be PG at most: cheesecake is fine but no
nudity. Having to put modesty stickers on covers at conventions makes
books awkward to sell.
- The front cover should have enough dead space for the
series logo, your name, and the Jarlidium logo/price box (which includes
the mature-readers label, if required). This dead space doesn't have to
be empty, it's just that what whatever is there will get covered up so
it should be unimportant to the picture. These elements normally appear
at the top of the cover but can be moved if that produces a better
layout.
- See the general remarks about DPI and file
formats too.
Introduction or Bio
The inside front cover is your page to talk about yourself, your art, and
what's in the book. A bio is one possibility, but you're welcome to
write about something else if you like. You are also welcome to plug
your website, webcomic, or prints or commissions or anything else you
may be selling. If you have any art which could be used as a frame or a
background or accompaniment to the text, feel free to provide that as
well.
Because the cover is printed in color on both sides, the inside front cover
is also your opportunity to include a piece of color art (other than the
cover) even in black and white books. You can do color art to go with your
intro/bio, or we can move the intro/bio to the first interior page (facing
the inside front cover) and just have art on the inside front cover.
Interior Art
You have 23 (or 27 or 31) pages to fill. If you have small pieces of
art, that may mean more than one piece per page. If you have large
pieces of art, we can print them full-bleed (running off the edges of
the page), if it's appropriate. Comic stories are encouraged, if you
have any; they can be a nice break from pinups. We are also happy to
print sketches and roughs. Pencils generally reproduce quite well. We
encourage you to include descriptions and commentary on the pieces,
especially if you're including sketches and roughs. You may have noticed
at online galleries that a good description or comment can really add a
lot to a piece of art, and it works in books too.
We will normally do the layout of the interior, so you only need to
provide the text and art. However, if you have some layout ideas,
we are open to suggestions. The best way to communicate your ideas to us
is via low-resolution mockups of the page(s), then we can reproduce them
on our end, adjusting them for the technical requirements of our
printer.
One thing we can't print is anything beyond an R rating.* This is not an
editorial decision. It is a limit imposed by the printers who are
willing to do these very small print runs and we have no control over
it. Nudity is fine but anything explicitly sexual is not. We will work
with you on what images of yours we can print or not. (If you've ever
seen a recent copy of our North American Fur, that
would give you an idea of what we can print.)
We also prefer to stay away from trademarked characters owned by large
corporations with lots of lawyers, although we may allow a few if
they're clearly being used for parody or satire. Commissions you may
have done are a gray area. If you reserve publication rights as part of
your commission process, then the situation is clear, but not many
people are that formal when taking a commission. It's up to you to
decide whether and which commissioned pieces are appropriate to print.
*Pssst... if you really want to do a hardcore, no-rating book, ask us
about ArtZone Midnight Specials! There are still a few things we
can't/won't print, but the limit is determined by what's legal and what
we can stand to look at while we assemble the books. Midnight Specials
are a lot more work for us since we print them in-house, so we only do
them in cases where we feel that the art and content warrants one.
